NSLAB: Bridging NS theory and application domains

Two members of NSLab have recently advanced the bridge between Normalized Systems Theory and specific application domains: Jan Slifka submitted his PhD-thesis with the title "Evolvable Architecture of Client Applications with the Use of Normalised Systems Theory" and Vojtěch Knaisl submitted his PhD-thesis with the title "Designing and Implementing Machine-Actionability for Improving Evolvability in Data Stewardship Planning in Accordance with the Normalised Systems Theory".

Vojtěch also has a newly published journal paper “Machine-Actionability and Evolvability in Data Stewardship Planning: Framework, Implementation, and Case Study” in the Data Science Journal concluding his research. A full-text version of the article is available at:
https://datascience.codata.org/articles/10.5334/dsj-2025-025

These contributions show how NSLab researchers are extending NS theory into practice, addressing client application architecture and data stewardship planning while highlighting machine-actionability and evolvability as central themes.

Vivahub

VivaHub receives prestigious award

Since the beginning of this year, NSX has been a co-initiator of the VivaHub project as part of our Healthcare initiatives. VivaHub brings together the physical Gezondheidskiosk (Health Kiosk) and the digital referral platform Zipster to make healthcare more accessible, preventive, and community-driven. The project aims to bridge the gap between in-person guidance and digital assistance, ensuring that every citizen can find the right support at the right time.

Within VivaHub, Zipster - developed using NSX technology - will serve as the digital backbone, allowing kiosk staff to guide citizens to local care and welfare services while also generating data-driven insights into the social and health needs of communities. These insights help local authorities and organizations improve coordination and tailor their services to real-world needs.

In September, VivaHub and the Health Kiosk received a prestigious award from the Royal Academy of Medicine of Belgium, recognizing their innovative contribution to preventive and integrated care. The Academy praised the initiative for its warm, neighborhood-based approach and its strong focus on accessibility, inclusion, and early intervention. The combination of human interaction and digital innovation can serve as a model for the future of community health in Flanders and beyond.

This collaboration illustrates how NSX's evolvable software architecture can be applied to real-world challenges, supporting sustainable, data-driven ecosystems that improve health and well-being across local communities. More information about VivaHub can be found at www.vivahub.be.
